Mental Health and mental toughness are not the same. While both are important, distinguishing the two makes all the difference in the world to maintain healthy and productive communication between coaches and athletes.
Our student-athletes have taken on a lot of responsibility. That huge load can become enormous pressure on their mental health. There are seven areas of concern within themselves that they deal with that usually never have the opportunity to be addressed. The conversations are pivotal for them to gain control and authority over these feelings and emotions to maintain performance.
The emphasis to WIN in our athletic programs are higher than it's ever been before. To achieve lofty goals year in and year out, it is imperative that coaches and athletes are on the same page working as one unit. Understanding the mental training and preparation it takes to be successful is just important as the physical demands. That culture starts with a detailed and comprehensive understanding of what has to happen with our character to have a championship season.
Every team has three types of student-athletes in their program; the "all in", the "half way in", and the "all out". How to get all three to "buy in" together has always been the challenge. Understanding what motivates and inspires each individual athlete is the key to unlocking that unique chemistry on a team. Discovering that knowledge and developing the process of coming together makes every season special.
For far too long the locker room has been a place where toxic masculinity and character has taken place. It is the first environment our athletes enter into before heading out to practice or a game. The locker room should be that safe space that does not add anymore difficult life pressure that our student-athletes may be currently experiencing. The locker room should have a culture where every student -athlete has the opportunity to heal mentally and emotionally and refocus on the person they have committed to becoming.
Student-athletes and coaches should never feel like their alone in their pursuit to have success. With a huge work load of demands, it is difficult to establish a healthy work life balance. A healthy work life balance ensures that both student-athletes and coaches can bring their "best self" to accomplishing goals for themselves as well as for the team.
It is difficult to find the right support for our student-athletes if we do not have an understanding of what they are going through. Learning how to become a good listener to their concerns and how to access resources to assist is important. Embracing the fact that is a new world that both the family and the student athlete have entered into is how to maintain objectivity throughout the process.
The athletic journey is not a sprint but a marathon. Goals and objectives about "why I want to pursue this sport" is fluid. As our student-athletes develop personally into the person they will eventually end of being, we have to give them that authority to carve out that path. Empowering them to make those choices about how they intend to reach their goals opens up healthy conversations that are both productive and constructive.
We can't control our journey toward athletic success. The unexpected happens and how a student-athlete and their family chooses to handle these moments matter. How do we overcome sudden changes in our goals together is an important plan that needs to be established.
Things are not always going to go our student-athletes way. They will be challenged by those that take pride in bringing the best of them. How do we plan to communicate with our student-athletes encounters those conflicts? The methods we choose to support them is vital to their personal development.
There will be moments where your student-athlete may struggle with self doubt. How we communicate who they are in these challenges times are crucial. Balancing effective motivation and tough love is the key. Being present with them, without judgement, as they are navigating through the process to redefine themselves is the empowerment they need.
